Overview

This experience takes you into the White and Black Deserts, two striking landscapes in Egypt’s Western Desert, part of the larger Sahara Desert. You’ll explore how these neighbouring areas form a dramatic contrast in natural features, offering a sense of otherworldly scenery as you move through the terrain. In the White Desert you’ll see bright white chalk rock formations sculpted by wind erosion over thousands of years. Many of the rocks resemble giant mushrooms, animals or abstract shapes, and the pale sand and stone give the area its distinct, almost mystical appearance. The formations may look particularly striking at sunrise and sunset, when the rocks can take on pinkish or golden tones. The White Desert lies about 45 km north of the oasis town of Farafra, and has been protected since 2002. The Black Desert provides a counterpoint to the White Desert, emphasising that dramatic contrast in landscapes that draws travellers to this part of the Western Desert.
