Cave Church in Garbage City and Coptic Quarter of Old Cairo.
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
In the morning you will be picked up from your hotel in Cairo and taken to the Monastery of Saint Simon, also known as the Cave Church of Zabbaleen, on Mokattam Mountain. The drive will pass through the so‑called Garbage City, an area where a large population of garbage collectors, or Zabbaleen, live. Several churches have been built into the Mokattam caves; as you move through the site, you will visit Saint Simon the Tanner Hall and St. Mark’s Church. The huge cave was discovered in 1974 and was originally full of hundreds of tons of stone reaching up towards the 17‑metre high ceiling. It was later cleared and prepared to contain two levels. The upper story serves as St. Simon the Tanner Hall, with seating for around 2,000 people and walls decorated with many engraved rock pictures depicting scenes from the Bible. You will also visit the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary and St. Simon the Tanner. After the visits, you will be taken back to your hotel.
