Discover Alexandria: Day Trip from Cairo
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
You will meet your guide at your hotel and travel to Alexandria for a day of archaeology and coastal history. In Alexandria you will explore the Kom El Shoqafa necropolis, an ancient burial complex that blends Pharaonic, Greek and Roman influences. As you move through the catacombs, you will see the circular staircase once used to transport bodies and learn that the site dates back to the 2nd century AD and was rediscovered in 1900. Next you will view Pompey’s Pillar, a 30‑metre red granite column erected around 300 AD in honour of Emperor Diocletian. Although commonly called Pompey’s Pillar, it has no connection to the Roman consul Pompey. You will hear about the pillar’s place on the site of the ancient Serapeum, which was destroyed in 391 AD by a Christian mob led by patriarch Theophilus, and note that only the pillar remains of that grand temple. Nearby tunnels and artefacts from the area are on display in the Greco‑Roman Museum. Your tour will conclude at the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th‑century fortress established by Sultan Al‑Ashraf Sayf al‑Din Qa'it Bay, where you can take in the fortress architecture and its coastal setting.
