Elephantine Island on Aswan
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
On Elephantine Island you will explore the remains of a place that pre-dates the city of Aswan. The island was once the pharaonic trading town called Swenet, and its position just below the turbulent waters of the First Cataract made it naturally defensible. As you move through the site, you will learn how that location turned the island into an important trade hub where caravans from the south typically unloaded goods for onward transport north along the Nile. Scattered across the island you will see the late‑pharaonic Temple of Khnum and a number of partially excavated ruins left from the earlier settlement. Along the way, the ruins illustrate the island’s long history as a riverine crossroads and give a sense of how ancient trade and natural features shaped life here before Aswan grew into the city known today.
