Giza Pyramids and Mighty Sphinx
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
In the Giza area you will encounter the world‑famous Pyramids of Giza. The Pyramid of Cheops originally reached about 150 metres, making it the tallest in the world. It was built from over two million stone blocks, each weighing around two and a half tonnes. Climbing to the top is forbidden. Close to Cheops you will find the Mortuary Temple of Khufu, the Solar Boat Museum and the Tomb of Queen Hetepheres, which is the only tomb from the Old Kingdom that has not been desecrated. As you move through the plateau, you will see the Pyramid of Chephren, the best preserved of the group. It still retains its outer limestone casing over the pink granite, and you can visit its two burial chambers and the empty sarcophagus. The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three and has suffered from looting over time. Alongside these structures stands the imposing Sphinx, with a human head on a lion’s body, formed from natural rock to which polished stone was added.
