Overview

You will explore a side of Cairo that shows daily life and local culture, guided by a local expert. Transfer in an air-conditioned vehicle is included. The experience begins in the Cairo (Reality) neighbourhood and moves through nearby local sites on foot so you can take in the streets and atmosphere as you go. As you move through the historic City of the Dead, you will visit tombs, houses and a mausoleum, and see how people live among medieval tombs in the northern cemetery. Along the way you will pass the area known as “Garbage City,” where workers scrape together a living on mounds of trash. You will also explore the cave church of St. Simon the Tanner Monastery, carved into Mokattam Mountain, and see the Islamic cemetery and its historic features. The tour finishes with a visit to the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo, noted for being one of Egypt’s oldest and largest mosques. Throughout, your local guide will provide context and help you understand what you are seeing as you walk together through these atmospheric parts of the city.
