Luxor Highlights East & West banks
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
Luxor stands on the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Waset, known to the Greeks as Thebes. Often described as the world’s greatest open-air museum, the modern city contains the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor. As you explore the area, you will encounter monumental stone ruins and temple remains that speak to the city’s long history and religious importance. Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs of the west bank necropolis. Along the west bank you will find the burial landscape that includes the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, among other monumental sites. The contrast between the temple ruins within the city and the funerary complexes across the river will give you a broad sense of ancient Thebes’ spiritual and cultural landscape.
