Old Cairo and Citadel - Islamic and Coptic Cairo

Overview

This experience takes you to Salah El Din Citadel, the fortress constructed in 1183 AD, where you will explore its historic setting and the buildings within its walls. Inside the castle you will see Mohamed Ali Mosque, built in the 19th century, allowing you to observe the contrast between the medieval citadel and a later imperial mosque. You will also tour Old Cairo, the site of a city that pre-dated Cairo. As you move through the area, you will encounter many historic churches and the remains of a Roman fort, and gain a sense of the layers of history that shaped the neighbourhood. Along the way you will see landmarks from different eras and learn how this part of the city developed before modern Cairo.
