Overview

You will explore downtown Cairo, wandering its classical streets lined with highly decorated buildings. Many of these structures date back more than two hundred years and reflect a French, Parisian style introduced during the kingdom of Muhammed Aly. Khedive Ismael is credited with building streets, bridges and many of the landmark façades that give this area its distinctive look. As you move through the city, you will visit Coptic Cairo, home to some of the oldest churches in the city, which date to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Highlights include the Suspended Church of the Virgin Mary and Abu Serga Church, and you will also see the Ibn Ezra Synagogue, the city’s oldest synagogue dating to the 9th century AD. Along the way you will enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant and have the chance to share tea or coffee at neighbourhood cafés. Later you will explore Islamic Cairo and the bustling Khan el-Khalili bazaar, and the day will end with a relaxing sail down the Nile in a felucca.
