Overnight Trip to Alexandria from Cairo

Overview

You will be picked up from your hotel and travel to Alexandria for a day of historical sites and coastal sights. Your first stop is the Catacombs of Kom El Shokafa, the largest Roman cemetery with three levels carved into the rock, where you can explore the underground chambers. Next you will see the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria and its display of sunken monuments that were discovered under the East harbour. Along the way you’ll drive past Pompay’s Pillar and pause for photos of this monument, which was constructed in honour of the Emperor Diocletian at the end of the 4th century. The tour continues to the Citadel of Quaitbay, where you will enter the fortress and have time to photograph both its interior and exterior. You will also visit the Library of Alexandria, the modern institution that holds some 8 million books. In the library’s open court you can view the statue of Alexander the Great and the statue of Ptolemy the first, the latter having been found underwater nearby. Inside the library you will see the reading hall, and the programme also includes visits to the President Saddat Museum and the Impressions of Alexandria Museum, offering a varied glimpse of the city’s past and heritage.
