We travelled to Dahab expressly to visit St Catherine’s and Mount Sinai. We were very clear (repeatedly and in writing) of our requirements in advance and $270 duly changed hands. But when we got to the site, St Catherine’s was closed and our Bedouin guide unaware of any requirement to see anything other than the monastery. We asked the locals why it was closed. Three separate people said that it was always closed on this particular day every year for religious reasons. They pressured us to just see the outside of the monastery and climb up Mount Sinai to “complete the tour”. We asked for eith
