Overview

This experience takes you from Luxor to two of Upper Egypt’s northernmost temple sites: Abydos and Dendera. You will explore well-preserved ancient temples and learn about the gods and pharaohs they honour. Along the way, the contrasts between the two sites will illustrate different aspects of Egyptian religion and royal patronage. At Abydos you will see a temple complex that is considered one of the best preserved, built by Ramses II for seven gods and especially associated with Osiris, the god of the dead. The site lies about 135 km from Luxor and offers rich reliefs and inscriptions linked to funerary beliefs. At Dendera, located roughly 60 km north of Luxor, you will visit the temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess associated with love and joy; the monument dates back to around 2250 BC and displays distinctive art and symbolism connected to her cult. Together the two temples provide a clear sense of ancient religious life and royal devotion in this region.
