Overview

You will follow Al-Muizz li-Din Allah al-Fatimi Street, commonly known as al-Muizz Street, through the walled city of historic Cairo. As one of the city's oldest streets, it dates back to the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century and takes its name from the fourth Fatimid caliph, Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah. Walking along this north–south axis, you will get a sense of the street’s long history and its role in the fabric of the old city. Along the way you will see the Mosque of al-Hakim, a historic mosque named after Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (985–1021), the sixth Fatimid caliph and 16th Ismaili Imam. Construction began under Caliph al‑'Aziz in 990 AD and was completed by al‑Hakim in 1013. You will also explore Khan el-Khalili, the famous bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic centre, which was established as a centre of trade in the Mamluk era and has since become one of the city’s main attractions for both tourists and Egyptians. As you move through these sites, you will learn about Cairo’s Fatimid origins and the later commercial life that shaped the city.
