When you visit Old Cairo, known as Christian Coptic Cairo, you'll enter an area long linked with the story of the Holy Family. The neighbourhood still carries the spiritual atmosphere of that tradition: their stay was brief, and when the governor of then‑Fustat became enraged by the tumbling of idols as Jesus approached and sought to harm the Child, they took shelter in a cave above which, in later years, the Church of Abu Serga (St Sergious) was built. The whole Fort of Babylon area remains a place of pilgrimage for Egyptians and Christians from around the world, and an air of piety and devotion pervades the district. As you move through the quarter, you will be able to visit and enter several of its historic religious sites. Along the way you can see the Church of Abu‑Sergah and St Barbara, explore the Hanging Church, and visit the old Jewish synagogue, the Ben Ezra Synagogue. These landmarks sit within the Fort of Babylon area and together convey the layered faith and history that characterise Christian Coptic Cairo.
