Overview
In Luxor, the ancient city of Thebes, you will explore a place that once served as the great capital of Upper Egypt. Known as the “city of the 100 gates”, Thebes was one of only three cities in Egypt and rose to prominence as a political, religious and military centre. Along the way you will learn about its role in expelling the Hyksos and about its principal deity, Amun, who was regarded as the ‘king of gods’. You will also encounter the religious life of the city, including the temple of Amun where the statue of the god was transferred from Karnak during the Opet Festival, the great religious feast. Thebes’ spiritual significance continued into the Christian era, when monks established monasteries among the ancient monuments. Among these is the temple of Hatshepsut, now called el-Deir el-Bahri (“the northern monastery”), which is largely considered to be one of the “incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt”. Throughout, you will see how layers of history—Pharaonic worship, grand festivals and later Christian devotion—have left their mark on this remarkable site.
