Tour to Fayoum Oasis and Wadi el Rian from Cairo

Overview

A representative will pick you up from your hotel in Cairo and drive you to the Fayoum oasis, about 95 km away. In Fayoum you’ll visit the ruins of Karanis, an ancient city whose monuments date from the Roman, Coptic and early Islamic periods. Along the way you’ll see the traditional Water Wheels, which are said to have been running since the Ptolemaic era. You’ll then spend time at Lake Qaroun, where you can see different kinds of birds. Lake Qaroun is considered one of the oldest natural lakes in the world; it is the third largest lake in Egypt and the remainder of Lake Old Moerisi. Nearby you’ll explore Kasr Qaroun, which includes a well-preserved temple and the remains of the Graeco‑Roman city of Dinysios. The final stop is Wadi El Rian, designated a Protected Area in 1989. This natural depression lies 42 metres below sea level and contains two lakes joined by Egypt’s only waterfalls, which were formed in 1970 by overflow from Fayoum’s farmland drainage. You will then be transferred back to Cairo.
