Wadi Natroun The holy family trip
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
Following Pope Francis’ recognition of the Holy Family’s trip in Egypt as an official Christian pilgrimage, this experience takes you to the Wadi al Natrun churches and monasteries. You will be picked up from your hotel by a private tour guide and travel by private air‑conditioned bus to the valley. As you move through the site, you will learn about the area’s history and its importance to the Copts since the 4th century: anchorites living in caves, the building of monasteries, and how the Khalifa’s amnesty after the Arab invasion allowed Christian monks to continue their faith. You will also hear about Wadi al Natrun’s long connection to the Coptic patriarchate and the tradition of electing the patriarch from its monks. After visiting the monasteries, you will have lunch with a Middle Egyptian family. You will learn how to cook traditional Egyptian food, taste what you prepare, and share tea and coffee while enjoying general conversation with your hosts. The experience blends historical insight with a hands‑on cultural encounter, giving you both context and personal contact with local life.
